P.S. Fr. Bill asked Computer Center people before about Internet... and he asked the question that goes like this:

Should we build the highway first before the cars come or should we wait for the cars before building the highway...

He was relating to internet access during that time...Should we wait for the internet demand before we put up internet or wait for the demand before offering internet....

My answer now: Build the highway before the cars come... I think that what also happened ... although not explicitly stated by Fr. Bill... First option is proactive and the second option is reactive.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take

another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said I

love you but I know this other woman loves you and

would love to spend some time with you.

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my

MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the

demands of my work and my three children had made it

possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner

and a movie.

"What's wrong, are you well," she asked? My mother is

the type of woman who suspects that a late night call

or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to be with you," I

responded. "Just the two of us."

She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I

would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up

I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I

noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our

date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had

curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had

worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.

She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an

angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my

son, and they were impressed, "she said, as she got

into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our

meeting". We went to a restaurant that, although not

elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my

arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down,

I had to read the menu. Large print. Half way through

the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting

there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you

were small," she said.

"Then it's time that you relax and let me return the

favor," I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation -

nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent

events of each other's life. We talked so much that we

missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go

out with you again, but only if you let me invite

you." I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got

home. "Very nice. Much more so than I could have

imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart

attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have time to do

anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy

of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and

I had dined.

An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I

wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I

paid for two plates - one for you and the other for

your wife. You will never know what that night meant

for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying

in time: "I LOVE YOU!" and to give our loved ones the

time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more

important than God and your family. Give them the

time they deserve, because these things cannot be put

off till "some other time."

Pass this along to everyone with an aging parent, to a

child, to an adult, to anyone with a parent.

Here's hoping today is better than yesterday.

1] Download Adobe Flash Player (the .tar.gz package) from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P2_Platform=Linux&P3_Browser_Version=Netscape4
into /usr/src

2] Then extract it
tar -xzf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

We need to transform our nation for the better through the education we have received. Let us stop asking the government to give us jobs, do this for us, etcetera, etcetera... As the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country”. I also remember what my friend, who visited Japan, a couple of months ago said: Japanese put the love for their country first before their families. Maybe, that explains why the Japanese is so advanced. So, let me ask you, what will you do to help our society? wine in Ubuntu

Running windows applications in Linux has become very much easy. Last time I tried it was not that easy and screen size of graphics application was not good... but that was more than 5 years ago. It is now just as simple as 2 steps:

1] sudo aptitude install wine
2] wine [name of application]

I tried about 3 applications and did not encountered any complications. A sample screenshot of Diablo II (one of the 3 applications I tested) in my Ubuntu Box is shown on the left.

Example, I extracted the boot sector of Windows 2000. It was mounted on /dev/hda1 and save the boot sector on file named w2k.bs.

5] install the icewm (the minimal windows manager), firefox browser and openoffice.org 2.0

Videoconferencing @ MBZ

We finally got Videoconferencing to work with our system. During the MBZ (Movement for Better Zamboanga), we were able to host videoconferencing for almost 2 hours between ADZU and Mozcom Manila, Main Office. Thanks to Jessmike of Mozcom and Dr. Bill Torres for the setup and service. We used Polycom V500 and enabled ports 3230-3235 and 1718-1720. We brought down the entire 4Mbps bandwidth Internet link of the ADZU community to give it to the videoconferencing which requires only 128kbps. This improved the video output of the videocon. I will probably do a traffic prioritization next time so as not to interrupt the browsing of ADZU users. ;)

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networking technology is the Internet evolved, say proponents who also worry about legal concerns. The music recording industry has already successfully shut down Napster and is currently lobbying to outlaw P2P technology; movie and music firms have also asked the Supreme Court to hold P2P software firms liable for copyright infringement committed using their products; and the Justice Department has suggested P2P networks could be used by terrorists. Yet P2P innovation continues as small firms and open-source groups develop more uses, including super-efficient voice calls, workplace collaboration, and distributed data storage. P2P networks are actually closer to what the Internet was intended to be--a network of equal peers that was not reliant on centralized services. The Internet today is more like "television with packets" with a hub-and-spoke distribution system, says technology consultant Clay Shirky. P2P traffic consumes a huge amount of Internet resources, some of it legal but most of it for illegally shared copyrighted works. P2P network-services firm CacheLogic estimates that more than half of all Internet traffic is actually P2P activity, and that the BitTorrent application alone makes up 35 percent of all Internet traffic; BitTorrent is an open-source program that up-ends many traditional assumptions about the Internet, including the idea that popularity means bandwidth penalties. With BitTorrent, users pass around small pieces of large files in a system called swarming, and users that share more content are rewarded with faster connections. Meanwhile, many legal P2P distribution services are emerging, including LionShare, a Penn State University program for globally distributing academic information; Red Swoosh, a network set up to legal distribute copyrighted content; and the Internet Archive, a non-profit Internet archive of digital content that uses five P2P systems to manage bandwidth efficiently and inexpensively.
